A dual firmness crib mattress with organic cotton cover
Choosing the right crib mattress is one of the most important things that you can do for your baby. A good quality mattress will help to support your baby’s muscle development as they grow into a walking talking toddler. It will help to ensure that every night’s sleep is a comfortable one.
Your baby’s mattress needs to be firm as to reduce suffocation hazards and decrease the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
Here’s what we have to say about the Colgate Eco Classica III and how well it does in meeting the desired requirements.
Quick Review of Colgate Eco Classica III
What we love
- This mattress is made from eco-friendlier materials – the foam interior is made using plant oils instead of environmentally harmful petroleum-based oils.
- It’s dual-sided with a hard side and a soft side. Also known as a 2-stage crib mattress. This makes it ideal to use with both babies and toddlers.
- It’s designed to last due to its ability to grow with your baby into their toddler years. The inverted seams also make for a more snug fit and more durability.
- The cover is made from organic cotton which is backed with waterproof material – your baby will remain against a soft and organic surface while the interior of the mattress stays dry. Organic cotton is the safest choice for your baby’s sensitive skin as it limits exposure to harmful chemicals.
- It’s made by a family-owned business.
What we don’t like
- The Eco Classica is not entirely organic; only 20% of the foam is derived from plant oils. However, it is still much more organic compared to other brands and comes at a more affordable price than fully organic mattresses.
- The waterproof cover is not removable, which can make it slightly more difficult to clean.
A great choice for parents with concern for organic and looking for a 2-stage mattress: baby and toddler.
Colgate Eco Classica III Complete Review
The Colgate Eco Classica III is a great choice for those concerned with having a safe and organic sleeping environment for their baby, but not wanting to spend a huge amount of money. In a previous article, we spotlighted it as one of the best organic mattresses for baby beds.
It’s the ideal investment to last your baby from the early months of her life well into their toddler years and is designed to suit your baby’s needs at both of these stages. This mattress meets both federal and state flammability and chemical composition requirements.
The Colgate Eco Classica III has been designed by a family run business known as “The Crib Mattress specialist”. They have been dedicated to producing baby-friendly and baby safe products since 1955, and as such has your baby’s best interests at the forefront. Here’s my take on the best features of the Colgate Eco Classica III.
This mattress is also dual-sided with dual firmness, so it will grow with your baby as they head into their toddler years. Many parents flip the mattress to the softer toddler side at about 12 months of age – but you may want to wait a little longer to be sure that this is the safest option for your baby. A double-sided or 2-stage crib mattress removes the need to purchase two mattresses that are suitable at different ages. So although a dual-sided mattress isn’t as cheap as basic baby mattresses, you’ll only have to make a single purchase for the first few years of your baby’s life.
The company doesn’t market this product as organic, but rather as ‘eco-friendlier,’ which they state is their approach to providing transparency about the product you’re purchasing. However, the brand doesn’t provide detailed information about the specific materials used in their product, and they only mention that the foam is ‘plant-based.’ But, you can be sure that this mattress is made from much kinder materials – both for your baby and the planet – than many cheaper options. The eco component of the mattress is said to be kept at 20% as a higher percentage would compromise the firmness of the sleeping surface.
The waterproof organic cotton cover of the Colgate Eco Classica III keeps the material of the mattress dry while protecting your baby from bugs and dust mites that are often found within mattresses. As the cover cannot be removed, it is suggested that you use an extra bedsheet or mattress pad to make cleaning easier.
This mattress fully complies with all national and federal flammability requirements – without the use of fire retardant toxic products.
Though at first feel this mattress may feel too firm to be comfortable, that’s exactly the point of a carefully designed baby mattress. A firm surface is important to promote safe sleep for your baby and help her to develop important muscles. Anyway, babies can sleep happily anywhere, so make that ‘anywhere’ a safe one. Remember that this is a dual firmness mattress, but the softer side is not recommended before your little one’s first birthday.
Here’s what other parents have to say about the Colgate Eco Classica III:
It’s the ideal option if you’re looking for a quality mattress made from environmentally friendly materials, without the price tag that comes with organic products. One parent said that “for the quality standards and the price you can’t beat this one”.
Many parents found that their babies sleep deeper and for a longer amount of time. This mom talks about her first night with the new mattress: “first night in the crib with the mattress and my little one (at the time 4 months) slept 12 hours!”. Another mom simply put – “the baby SLEEPS”.
The mattress provides babies with a comfortable but firm surface to sleep on, it’s “truly lightweight but so firm”.
It’s the perfect fit for standard size cribs and “there is no part of the mattress that seems less firm than another”.
Is it a good purchase?
In short, yes. The Colgate Eco Classica III was one of the runners-up in our selection of the best organic crib mattress. This mattress is ideal for eco-conscious parents who are looking for the safest components of safe sleep with a reasonable price tag. Your baby’s mattress will be one of your most important purchases, and by opting for the Colgate Eco Classica III you can have some peace of mind. Your baby will sleep comfortably and with less risk into their toddler years.
Another exceptional product is the Moonlight Slumber Little Dreamer dual firmness crib and toddler mattress. We reviewed it in detail in our guides to the best crib mattress and the best mattress for Ikea baby beds. However, if we compare it against the Colgate Eco Classic III mattress, the latter was made with more organic materials and is less expensive.
